SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. has a penchant for wheeling horses back on short rest, but rare is it to hear of any runner capturing two races in the same week at Saratoga.

Three days after an easy 8 ¾-length score in a $20,000 claiming race on Monday, the Dutrow-trained El Real Madrid was sent back to the track approximately 68 hours later for a $35,000 claimer, winning again, this time by 3 ¾ lengths.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito is going to take his time making a final determination whether to run all three of his entrants in Saturday’s 141st running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course.

Front-running Miner’s Reserve, runner-up to A Little Warm in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy July 31, drew post position 1 in the 11-horse field. Florida Derby winner Ice Box will break from post 6, and Dwyer winner Fly Down from post 8 in the 1 ¼-mile race.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard and owner William Pape kept their perfect meet record intact when Sermon of Love came from off the pace to win the 69th running of the Grade 1, $100,000 New York Turf Writers Cup steeplechase on Thursday at Saratoga Race Course.

It was the fourth victory in as many starts over fences for Sheppard and Pape at the Spa, and the second for Sermon of Love, who also captured the $70,000 Jonathan Kiser Novice Stakes here on July 29.
