A list of horses that look ‘live’ and solid ready to win prospects, at tracks across North America. Horses are considered playable for win only at odds of 3-1 or better, and 5-1, for win-place. Each horse is playable a maximum of three times.
March 13 (Santa Anita)
DAN THE CAPTAIN
Hollendorfer colt made racing debut and was sent hard to the half (: 44.3) and quit in deep stretch.
Looks to be primed to garner an early ‘sheepskin’.
March 20 (Gulfstream Park)
E.H.INDY
Debuted on the grass for good barn and with some good works and a huge Tomlinson figure for the turf distance. Broke very slow which is sometimes the case with first time starters but was noticed closing very well to finish fifth.
March 27 (Fair Grounds)
HEYWOODS
Lightly raced colt from decent barn, finished third in his best start to date. Looks to have a grass future and next start will be his third off a layoff!
(Santa Anita)
THERMAL WAVE
Debuting colt made initial start on tricky downhill turf course, after posting a serious work tab. Although the winner was long gone, this son of Unusual Heat showed a determined run in the stretch.
(Tampa Bay)
TOFFEE
Debuted with series of nice works showing but never got into the race, despite taking money at the end and going off as post time favourite. Those works were too good not to give another chance!
April 2 (Keeneland)
MEANDER
Four-year-old filly looked to be taking a decisive edge in first start since last August at Saratoga. Post time favourite was bumped and steadied and eventually pushed off the course to finish 12th and last. Certainly a nightmare trip so give her another shot!
(Santa Anita)
ISN’T SHE SWEET
Off slow in her turf debut but rallied for fourth in a good effort. Should be that much better next time with that race under her belt.
WARRENS SWEETHONEY
Debuted in the same turfer as the one above. Thought she was on a surface that she isn’t exactly bred for, and this filly should run better next start, especially on the synthetic. Also she hails from a barn that is also better second time out!
(Woodbine)
MYTH BUSTING
How good was this girl? Was off slowly in her racing debut, but closed four and five wide to finish a good second.
TROUBLE TODAY
Looked to be making a serious move on the outside turning for home, but the five and six wide journey seemed to take its toll, as the track on opening day looked like the outside was not the place to be. Might need more than 5 furlongs as well.
UNHINGED
Was in the same race as Myth Busting, closed well for third and was another that the five-furlong distance proved to be too short for.
April 3 (Aqueduct)
ALLTIFFEDOFF
Was not disgraced in his second turf start, the first being his racing debut last October. Might just be better on the green, as he is out of a multiple graded stakes placed turf mare that earned $459,000.
CREPE AU SUCRE
Made racing debut with a tremendous work tab but was never a factor. This guy might be better when they stretch him out.
(Gulfstream Park)
KENTUCKY JONES
Son of Smarty Jones looked to have victory in his sights in turf miler, only to check in the stretch after being in tight quarters. Looks to be quite comfortable on the ‘green stuff’.
(Santa Anita)
PRIMED
Mandella-trained filly might have been taking an edge in her racing debut, but found the even money favourite to tough to go past and settled for second money. She shouldn’t be held off for too long though!
TEA PARTY TIME
Three-year-old gelding made racing debut but was ice cold on the board, despite some serious works showing. Was wide into the stretch and perhaps just needed the racing experience! Possibly a future Longshot Play!
April 10 (Keeneland)
FIRST DUDE
Here’s a colt that just doesn’t seem to get a break. Thought he had a good chance to win the Blue Grass after a troubled trip in the Florida Derby, however he was jostled around at the start by the eventual race winner, and didn’t seem to look comfortable at all through most of the race. Perhaps it was the unsettled start, or maybe the track itself, but colt is worth keeping an eye on, as I think he can run when given the chance!
FORDANGSHORE
Making his second lifetime start, first on synthetic, and did not get away from the gate promptly. Did recover nicely to lose the win by a head bob at the finish. Three-year-old is lightly raced and is getting better.
(Woodbine)
LUNA NOVA
Daughter of Mobil made initial start at the short five-furlong distance and was off very slow. Filly was well bet and hails from a barn that is very good second time out.
