Through The Binoculars….

A list of horses that look ‘live’ and solid ready to win prospects, at tracks across North America. Horses are considered playable for win only at odds of 3-1 or better, and 5-1, for win-place. Each horse is playable a maximum of three times.

February 20 (Tampa Bay Downs)
GETTING AWAY
Shut off going into second turn, virtually losing all chance at the win. Did regroup enough to close well for third.

February 21 (Santa Anita)
EXCESS POWER
Debuted for good barn and with some good works. Broke 10th and tried to close five wide on a track where being four and five wide wasn’t the place to be.

VISION OF GOLD
Another first time starter that made debut from the rail, which can be intimidating to say the least for any horse, let alone a ‘firster’. Was off slow but did show some late run. Next time from a better post might do the trick!

March 7 (Aqueduct)
WAYLADY
Looked to be an improving sort of season debut, and was sitting in a good stalking position off the race speed, only to flatten out in the stretch. Filly may have ‘bounced’ a bit off the first start of season and may be better next out, the third start off a layoff.

(Fair Grounds)
BLOWN
Three-year-old filly made racing debut off some respectable works, for a good barn, and was second best, to a more experienced rival. This gal should not be held off for too long!

SETTLING SEAS
Three-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly was making first start back since early January in a turf sprint, and looked to have some late run in the stretch, only to be bothered by another horse. Thought there might have been an inquiry into the stretch run, but the stewards let it go. Should be better next time out, with a cleaner trip!

(Gulfstream Park)
PERFECT SHIRL
Three-year-old filly was making lifetime debut in a turf miler, and off the works looked to have a big shot. Jockey had this girl in trouble two or three times during the race, but when she got loose finally in the stretch, she closed well for second. Being by Perfect Soul, filly looks to have a future on the grass.

WON HOT KITTY
Was in the same race as the one above, and also was making her racing debut, off a series of good works for a good first time barn. Filly is bred top and bottom for the green stuff and looked to come up just a little ‘short’ in the debut. Could be much tighter next time out!

(Santa Anita)
JAWS N’ PAWS
Sometimes you are lucky enough to witness a debut race, where you just say ‘Wow’, and that was the case with this girl. Was debuting off a series of great works, for a barn that can get the job done with a first time starter. This girl flipped her rider just before the start and ran off into the chute where she was corralled by the outrider. After this unsettling experience, I expected a scratch at the gate, and was actually surprised when the jock re-mounted and the filly was put into the gate. After this unsettling experience this filly won in workmanlike fashion, in a decent time, rallying late to win going away. This girl is a runner!

UNCLE GREG
Had the unfortunate task of trying to rally against a slow pace, that was being set by the heavy 2-5 favorite, which pretty well had been left alone on the front end. Did rally to get even with the favorite as they turned into the stretch, however, couldn’t sustain the rally to finish out of the money. This guy is improving, and all he needs is a good pace to run down.
